VIT chancellor G. Viswanathan gives away degrees to graduates during the university’s convocation. — DC
A total of 4,230 graduates received their degrees during the 26th annual convocation of VIT University. Former MP Era Sezhiyan gave away the medals to meritorious students.
Advocating the establishment of larger universities, similar to that of United States of America (USA), to accommodate a large number of students, Mr G. Viswanathan, chancellor of VIT University, stressed the need for a national policy for the youth in the light of the need to expand avenues of higher education in tune with the recommendations of the Sam Pitroda commission for creation of l,500 universities in the country.
Though it recommended five years ago not even hundred universities have been started, he said.
The gross enrolment ratio in the country is just 12 per cent as against 83 per cent in the U.S, 77 per cent in Russia and 34 per cent in Brazil.
“Armed with the advantage of the demographic dividend of having the largest youth population, India should provide higher education to all those aspiring for it. This is not possible without the cooperation of the Central and State governments, and private institutions.” Mr. Viswanathan said.
VIT vice presidents Sankar Viswanathan, G.V. Sampath, Sekar Viswanathan and G.V. Selvam were present during the occasion.
