DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — It didn't take long for Diego Maradona to weigh in on Middle East politics.
The football legend was finishing up training with his new Dubai club Al Wasl earlier this week when he was approached by a fan who gave him a Palestinian head scarf. He took the black-and- white checkered scarf, hugged the fan and then held it up to a TV camera and said "Viva Palestine" while flashing a victory sign.
A video of him accepting the scarf had been viewed more than 56,000 times on YouTube as of Thursday.
Maradona, an admirer of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Castro-ruled Cuba, may find his outspoken views tested in place like the United Arab Emirates, which frowns on acts of political expression and has been known to arrest foreigners who demonstrate for a cause.
